On Monday, October 29, 2012, Hurricane Sandy brought unthinkable devastation to parts of our Garden State, destroying homes, businesses and some of New Jersey's most identifiable icons. On Friday, November 2nd, we launched the Hurricane Sandy New Jersey Relief Fund Inc. to help New Jersey rebuild. To date, the Fund has raised $40 million from more than 33,000 donors world-wde.
The Fund, a 501(c)(3) independent non-profit organization, is chaired by First Lady Mary Pat Christie, and former U.S. Senator Bill Bradley serves as Honorary Vice-Chair. A number of New Jersey-rooted celebrities, including Bruce Springsteen, Jon Bon Jovi, Kelly Ripa, Kevin Jonas and Dr. Mehmet Oz also serve as Honorary Advisory Board members to help promote and assist the Fund. Our funding is specifically geared towards New Jersey relief and recovery efforts.
The Fund is engaging in extensive and ongoing conversations with Governors, business leaders and non-profit leaders who have organized similar relief efforts in recent years following Hurricane Katrina, Haiti, and September 11th. Additionally, several corporate partners providing pro-bono services are helping to outline the greatest needs in the affected communities, establish a thorough grants application process, and ensure donated monies are efficiently and responsibly allocated to deliver the greatest positive impact on New Jersey relief efforts.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and important groups like the Red Cross and Salvation Army, have provided a critical lifeline to individuals in the immediate aftermath of this disaster. The Hurricane Sandy New Jersey Relief Fund is committed to assisting communities, businesses and non-profits over the long-term, long after these important groups move on from our state.
